Meet the IEB

Interim Executive Board (IEB)

Jackie Eason (Chair of IEB)

Jackie is a governor consultant who has worked in special measures schools supporting improvement and academy conversion. She is a National Leader of Governance and works as an independent governor consultant. She also develops and delivers training on behalf of the National Governors Association.

 

Jackie will lead on the academy conversion process for the IEB.

Sarah Karkeek (Vice Chair)

Sarah is the chair of a multi-academy trust, a National Leader of Governance and has worked with a number of schools, both primary and secondary, who were in special measures.
Sarah will lead on staffing and personnel for the IEB.

Marie Hunter

Marie was, until very recently, Headteacher of a secondary school. She is now Chief Executive of proposed Multi Academy Trust. She is a National Leader of Education, a trained OFSTED Inspector and a Pupil Premium Reviewer.
Marie will lead on finance, pupil premium and SEND for the IEB.

Phil Roe

Phil has spent his entire career within education, nearly half as a Headteacher of an “outstanding” school. In 2000 his school achieved the accolade of becoming the most improved school in the country and as a result Phil became involved with developing government policy regarding school improvement. Latterly, he has spent time as an Advisor to the Ministry of Defence (if he told you more I’d have to kill
you!!), an LA advisor, an OfSTED Inspector, a School Improvement Partner and finally as Director of Education for the national charity Bernardo’s UK
Phil will lead on school improvement, the post OfSTED action plan, and teaching and learning.

Canon Perran Gay

 Perran is the Chaplain to the Isles of Scilly (the resident Church of England parish priest who serves the islands). He is a former secondary school teacher, and also has experience of adult education and clergy training through his work with Exeter University and the Diocese of Truro, and having led the Education Department at Truro Cathedral for seven years. He has been a governor of four church and community primary schools and a member of the governing body and audit committee of the University of St Mark and St John, Plymouth.
Perran will lead on safeguarding, Mundesley House and the Off-island bases for the IEB.

Ben Julian

I am one of four co-opted governors, appointed by the governing body itself on the basis of skills and experience. I live on St. Martin’s where I have run Churchtown Farm with my wife since we returned to the islands in 2002. I have two children in the school, one in St. Martin’s base and one in secondary at Carn Gwaval. I am the Vice-Chair of the Finance Committee, the Chair of the Headteacher Performance Management Committee and I also sit on the Personnel Committee. In addition to the committees, I am the link Governor for Leadership and Management and also for the boarding house. In addition to volunteering as a Governor I am a retained firefighter on St. Martin’s and a response team member for the international disaster relief organisation ShelterBox.

Carol Hicks

During my 26 years on Scilly I have been involved in education both as a teacher and a governor. I sit on the Curriculum Committee. I am the Literacy Link governor with a specific responsibility for Teaching and Learning. Having taught French in all the Primary bases, I have a special interest in Modern Foreign Languages.

Gill Boreham

I am a Foundation governor based on the mainland. I have many years of experience as a governor in a variety of schools and I undertake governor training on the mainland and at Five Islands School. I am responsible for SEN, Off Island Schools and Whistle blowing on the Five Islands governing body. I also chair the Personnel Committee and sit on the Finance Committee.

Susie Taylor

I have lived on Scilly for over 20 years, and have been a parent governor since January 2015. I have two children who are in primary classes at the St Mary's base. I am on the Curriculum Committee, and am one of the governors with responsibility for the Ofsted criterion 'Achievement' (with a specific focus on data). I am also the link governor for Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). You may come across me running the coastal paths, out in a kayak, or eating cake.

Heather Terry (retired December 2015)

I have been involved in Scillonian education for over 33 years, mainly as the head and only teacher on St Martin's for almost 24 years. On retirement I did primary supply teaching for seven years, working on all bases but usually Carn Gwaval and Tresco. On a weekly basis, I still hear children read at Carn Gwaval.

I have been a governor for nearly fourteen years and I am in the fifth year of chairing the Curriculum Committee. My specific governor responsibilities are Student Voice and Careers, but as Chair I try to keep an overview of all areas of provision for out our young people.
